Social skill refers to the ability of the person in a particular environment to behave in a way that enables the establishment, maintenance and promotion of positive relationships with people, that is, a skill that enables interaction and communication with others in a given social context. Having social skills is neither easy at all nor simple, and especially for the young population. Much of what children learn happens in a social situation, so these skills are necessary for the effectiveness of their education as well as for their self-confidence. Low self-esteem, which results from a lack of social skills, can cause anxiety when interacting with others or in unfamiliar environments. A child who is stable and confident feels comfortable in a variety of situations, and thus can learn and enjoy more. Like any other skill, children can master social skills in different ways by different approaches.
The focus of this paper is on gifted children and their social skills. Often they do not have the social skills that are appropriate for their age, which may be due to different interests than their peers; the feeling that they may be different or maybe are positioned to feel different from others. What is important for gifted children is giving them the opportunity to develop a wide range of social skills in order to increase their self-esteem and gradually expose themselves to different situations and activities to that end. This is the way to ensure success in young people's lives and their contribution to the progress of a society.
