The aim of this investigation was to determine the pollution with heavy metals of oriental
tobacco grown in the region of Radovis. Results obtained will reveal whether the investigated tobacco is ecologically safe for the smokers. Field investigations were made in 2004, in the growing period of tobacco. Experts from AD Jaka Tabak - Radovis took a total number of 35 samples from the middle belt of tobacco, from some more important localities and sites.
Collected tobacco raw was stringed and cured in a traditional way. Assessments were made of copper, lead, cadmium, zinc, manganese and iron. Tobacco samples were burned according to the method of wet burning with nitric and perchloric acid and measurements were made on atomic absorption spectrometer VARIAN SPECTRA AAA. The heavy metals content mg/kg in tobacco from this region ranged as follows: Cu 4.331- 52.40 mg/kg; Pb 1.62 - 19.8 mg/kg; Cd 0.22 - 2.5 mg/kg; Zn 17.87 - 68.92 mg/kg, Mn 45.23-930.52 mg/kg; Fe 233.068 - 3185.07 mg/kg. Based on the investigations, a general conclusion can be made that the oriental aromatic tobacco in the region of Radovis, except for the area close to the Bucim mine, is distinguished by its high quality and flavor and can be still considered as ecologically clean and safe product both for domestic consumption and for exports.
