Abstract

39 species of Nicotiana were tested to estimate their resistance to races 0 and 1 of Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotinae. 31 of the species were susceptible and 4 of them resistant to both races of the pathogen.
High resistance to race 0 was noticed in the species N. raimondii, N. alata, N. longiflora, N. plumbaginifolia, N. repanda, N. nesophila, N. stocktonii and N. nudicaulis, and N. paniculata, N. knightiana, N. solanifolia and N. trigonophylla were estimated with index 1 as moderately resistant.
When inoculation was made with race 1, high resistance was noticed in N. raimondii, N. alata, N. plumbaginifolia and N. nesophila and moderate resistance in N. solanifolia, N. longiflora, N. repanda, N. stocktonii and N. longiflora, N. repanda, N. stocktoni.
N. longiflora, N. repanda , N. stocktoni and N. Nudicaulis, which showed high resistance to race 0 were moderately resistant to race 1.
Natural resistance which is found in the species of Nicotiana can be used in selection, for breeding new tobacco varieties resistant to this pathogen.
