Abstract

From the application of two methods for monitoring the reaction of tobacco varieties to Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae inoculated in a stage of seedlings, the following conclusion can be drawn:
Tobacco varieties which carry resistance to black shank inherited from some resistant species or variety were investigated in this study. .
One of them was the variety Beinhart 1000-1, which showed high resistance to both races of the pathogen, in both methods of inoculation. Plants of the variety Ky x L8, carrying resistance from N. longiflora, were highly resistant to race 0, but susceptible to the race 1 isolates. Similar results were obtained with both methods of inoculation. NC2326, with resistance from N. plumbaginifolia, had similar reactions to race 0 and race 1.
Investigated tobacco varieties of domestic origin have a different reaction to the pathogen. Intensity of disease in these varieties depends on the aggressiveness of the isolate and on the physiological race to which it belongs.
This reveals that our tobacco varieties are not resistant to black shank. Therefore, it will become necessary for the breeders that in creation of new varieties in future they should use natural sources of resistance to the disease, e.g. N. longiflora, N. plumbaginifolia or others, which possess resistance to the pathogen of Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae.
