Abstract

Based on the results obtained in a four-year investigations, the following statements can be drawn:
The decrease of tobacco quality and yield as a result of the Black Shank disease is variable and depends on differences in the intensity of attack in various years and tobacco producing regions.
The causing agent of Black Shank on tobacco was recorded in several tobacco producing regions in our country (Prilep, Kumanovo, Strumica), with different intensity of the attack.
The virulence index in the investigated isolates is considerably variable, ranging from 0.00 in avirulent isolates P 137, C 170 and C 178 to 9.25 in the isolate P 8.
Isolates belonging to the race 1 are more virulent, with an index ranging from 5.83 in P 122 to 9.25 in P 8.
Isolates from the race 0 have a lower virulence, with an index ranging from 0.00 (P 137, C 170, C 178) to 6.75 (P 13).
Isolates from the region of Prilep have a higher virulence, with index from 0.00 (avirulent isolate P 137) to 9.25 (isolate P 8, race 1), while the index of isolates originating from the region of Strumica ranges from 0.00 (avirulent isolate C 170 and C 178) to 7.10 (isolate C 240, race 1).
Isolates from the region of Kumanovo have a poor virulence, with index from 0.07 to 3.25 (isolates K 254 and K 110, race 0), and the lowest virulence was recorded in the region of Demir Hisar, with index from 0.23 to 1.91 (isolates D 250 and D 243, race 0).
Association of the fungus isolates to physiological races was determined according to different reaction of plants from the species N. longiflora, N. plumbaginifolia and the variety Ky14 x L8 to the pathogen, showing a high resistence to race 0 and susceptibility to race 1.
Two physiological races of the pathogen P. parasitica var. nicotianae are present in tobacco producing regions of Macedonia - race 0 and race 1.
High presence of race 0, as well as the presence of race 1 of the pathogen, points out to a serious danger which threatens tobacco production in our country. This imposes the need for selection of tobacco varieties resistant to the pathogen as a most rational technique in tobacco protection from this dangerous disease.
