Abstract

The Republic of Macedonia offers suitable soil and climate conditions for production of good quality Virginia tobacco and there are good possibilities for its curing in the existing capacities. Physical and chemical properties of dry tobacco leaves are the basic external and internal indicators of tobacco raw quality and they are mutually interrelated to each other. The aim of this paper was to investigate major physical and chemical properties of some registered varieties and newly created lines grown in the region of Prilep. Trials were set up in the field of Tobacco Institute-Prilep in the period 2003-2004 on alluvial-colluvial soil. Six genotypes were included in investigation, of which two varieteis: ø MV-1 (CMS F1 ) and Sp. G-58 (fertile), and four newly created varieteis: V-27/01(fertile), Vx-20 (CMS F1 ), V-53 (CMS F1 ) and V-69 (CMS F1 ). Considering the fact that Virginia tobacco has a dominant share in blend cigarettes, we hope that our investigations will encourage the increase of Virginia tobacco production in the Republic of Macedonia and that the newly created lines will find their place in modern cigarette brands.
