DOMESTIC TOURISM SEASONALITY IMPACTS OF SCALE.pdf - Published Version Download (5MB) | Preview |
Abstract
Tourism seasonality represents a structural characteristic of tourism systems with significant macroeconomic implications for employment stability, capacity utilization, and regional income distribution. This study examines the seasonal structure of domestic tourism in North Macedonia over the period 2011–2025, with a comparative focus on the Municipality of Ohrid and the national aggregate. Using multiplicative time-series decomposition and normalized seasonal indices, the analysis evaluates seasonal intensity through Peak-to-Trough Ratios and summer concentration shares, while also assessing the structural weight of Ohrid within national domestic tourism.
The results reveal pronounced spatial differentiation. At the national level, domestic tourism is strongly summer-oriented, with 56% of arrivals and 74.8% of overnight stays concentrated between July and September. However, seasonality is substantially more intense in Ohrid, where 63.4% of annual arrivals and 84.5% of overnight stays occur during the same period. Peak-to-Trough Ratios confirm extreme asymmetry, particularly for overnight stays. Furthermore, Ohrid consistently accounts for roughly one-third to two-fifths of national domestic arrivals and nearly half of domestic overnight stays. The findings suggest that domestic tourism does not uniformly function as a stabilizing force; instead, its impact varies across spatial scales and may amplify seasonal volatility at the destination level.
