Abstract
Traffic safety represents a major engineering and societal challenge, in which traffic control systems, including traffic signals and signs, are essential components of modern road infrastructure. In this context, the location of speed limit signs plays a key role in ensuring timely driver reaction and safe speed adjustment. Speed limit signs are only effective if the driver can perceive the sign, react, and adapt speed before reaching the enforcement point or the beginning of the regulated zone. This paper proposes a simple physics-based model that relates human reaction time and achievable longitudinal acceleration (deceleration) to the minimum required distance, min., for speed transitions between two limits. A case study is presented for a transition from 60/ℎ to 50/ℎ, together with sensitivity results demonstrating how min. increases when reaction time is longer, or braking is weaker. The model provides practical guidance for the placement of speed limit and warning signs to enhance road safety and traffic control.
