Abstract

The paper aims to identify the business models of banks in Western Balkan countries and to determine the factors that affect their stability, measured by the Z-index. Using cluster analysis, two business models are identified for a sample of 76 banks, which account for 86% of total assets: banks more focused on corporate lending and retail banks. Retail banks show higher profitability and a lower level of risk compared to corporate banks.

By applying the fixed effects model, the authors conclude that the size of banks' assets and the non-performing loans indicator are statistically significant for stability in the entire sample. The non-performing loans indicator is a statistically significant variable in the assessment of the stability for retail banks, while the level of riskiness, calculated as the share of credit risk-weighted assets in total assets, is significant for the stability of corporate banks.
