Abstract

NATO's success is rooted in its ability to adapt to changing strategic circumstances. Today, NATO faces geopolitical threats (with escalation of state-based rivalries and disputes over territory, resources and values) with the persistent threat of terrorism, radicalization, proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, migratory flows, securitization of migration, cyber and environmental threats, instability along NATO's southern periphery, with numerous, disturbing non-state threats and man-made risks.
Within the framework of the paper, the author analyzes NATO's role through the realization of its three basic tasks - collective defense, crisis management and security cooperation, as well as building resilience in all domains. The realization of these three tasks is also related to the need to update the 2010 Strategic Concept – this will strengthen NATO's role as a unique and essential transatlantic forum for consultations.
In the final part of the paper, the author concludes that it is necessary to strengthen NATO's political role and tools in relation to new threats and challenges from every direction.
It is necessary to build and advance proactively – the role of the NATO Alliance – to use preventive tools in facing contemporary challenges. It is necessary to strengthen the political role, cohesion and unity of NATO, to strengthen the application of consultations and decision-making in the future.
In the framework of preparing the content of the paper, the author uses the following research methods: the descriptive method, the normative method, the comparative method and the content analysis method as a special scientific method.
Key words: political consultations, convergence, transatlantic consultations, collective security and defense
