Abstract

This study aims to investigate changes in body mass index, body fat percentage, and excess
weight loss following a weight loss program. Results show that there is a rapid improvement in
anthropometric parameters during the first year, with maximum improvement noted when body mass
index ranges between 45 and 32 kg/m², body fat percentage is reduced to 36%, and excess weight loss
is maximized at 69%. There is then a stabilization phase where there is a small increase in body mass
index, body fat percentage, and a decline in excess weight loss, indicating metabolic adaptation. This
study emphasizes the importance of distinguishing between total weight loss and changes in body
composition, emphasizing fat-free mass preservation. In addition, the concept of metabolic surgery is
discussed, showing that not only is there a benefit to obesity surgery, there is also a benefit to metabolic
disorders such as type 2 diabetes. Nutritional management is essential following laparoscopic sleeve
gastrectomy. A structured dietary program, progressing from liquids to solids, is recommended to
promote gastric healing, ensure adequate intake of proteins, which is >60–80 g/day, and minimize
postoperative complications. A high-protein diet is essential to ensure metabolic health, preventing
nutritional deficiencies.
