Abstract

This qualitative research examines the parents’ perception of the students’ assessment, regarding its objectivity with the aim to get more profound insights on the assessment practice. The sample consists of 200 parents. The analysis rests on the qualitative content analysis and the inductive-interpretative method, which enable the interpretation of the parents’ attitudes and experiences without using statistical procedures.

The results showcase that the assessment of the students’ achievements is experienced as a complex and sensitive process which do not always fulfill its pedagogical function. According to the parents, the grade is related to the subjectivity of the teachers and their personal impressions, which create a feeling of unjustice and inequality. Parents also point out to other aspects that are connected with the grade, such as the motivation, anxiety, professional aspect, their own behavior, and the unclear criteria and feedback. If taken into consideration, these insights may contribute to the improvement of the assessment practices.
