Abstract

With the emergence of the internet in the 90s, new technological solutions have been used to form
separate types of travel agencies. These are internet or online agencies whose most important feature is electronic
work, ie. e - business, using several types of e - business models, but in this paper they are not subject to analysis.
The formation of agencies is a tendency of spreading to new markets. From the aspect of the changes in the
competitive relations, two important features of the electronic agencies are highlighted:global business orientation
and focus on new markets, and entry of new competitors in the digital tourism market.
This segment of agency work in conditions of global financial and economic crisis in 2009, noted positive results
despite the fact that in all segments tourism enterprises have negative trends. In 2009, the sale of online package
arrangements was on the European market. The best example is Germany and France, where the profits of online
travel agencies grew by 10% and 30% in the following year.
The intensification of competition in the channels of sales was also affected by the emergence of a new type of
online companies, so-called aggregators, that represent an alternative to Global Distribution Systems (GDS) and
online agencies. They are called meta-search engines and they represent some kind of competitors who have a huge
ability to search databases on a number of sites in order to find the best possible offer according to the set end user's
requirements.
For today's role of electronic mediators in the distribution of hotel facilities, the data shows that 60% of tourists use
TripAdvisor's services, in the US market in 2013. In the paper we will give a description of Tripadvisor and
Expedia, as well as statistical indicators that speak of their growth and development as a modern sophisticated
online applications and their contribution to the development of electronic tourism.
