Abstract

In view of the fact that research in pragmatics worldwide is constantly on the rise and
that the number of researchers who investigate various aspects of language from the
point of view of pragmatics is increasing, as well as the fact that pragmatic research
is slightly neglected in Macedonian linguistics, this paper deals with one of the most
researched areas of pragmatics – speech acts and aspires towards making a valuable
contribution to the theory of speech acts.
The speech act of expressing condolences in the standard Macedonian
language is the subject matter of this study and the aim of the study is to investigate
the strategies which Macedonian native speakers use for expressing condolences on
Facebook. The research is of qualitative and quantitative nature and has a descriptive
design. The corpus consists of 200 Facebook comments made after the passing of the
famous and extravagant Serbian writer, Isidora Bjelica, on 5 August, 2020. The
research methodology comprises analysis, synthesis and comparison.
The results obtained point to several main strategies being employed by
Macedonian native speakers for expressing condolences on Facebook. These include
the following: religious expressions; expressions with which certain positive features
of the diseased person are praised and pointed out; emoticons, GIFs, pictures as well
as various combinations of all these strategies. These findings, compared with the
results obtained from other similar studies conducted in other languages, point to
certain similarities but also to some visible differences across languages and cultures
