Abstract

Environmental pollution is responsible for many health issues; ~7 million of the deaths worldwide each year are due to air pollution, while 3 % are due to drinking polluted water (WHO). Among the pollutants, heavy metals are major health concerns affecting all living organisms.
The primary goal of this project is to reduce the environmental pollution by usage of various agricultural/industrial waste materials. The project gives second chances to the waste and contributes towards a cleaner world. Namely, the disposed waste like, egg shells, nut shells, rice husks, corn cobs, fruit/vegetable peels, named as PoSH™ materials (Porous Shells and Husks), were tested for their potential to adsorb heavy metals, Pb, Zn, Ni and Cu. It was found that some of the PoSHTM materials like, coffee grinds, buckwheat husks, egg shells, can remove 70-90% of the tested metals from contaminated water. Special attention was paid to the removal of Pb, which is one of the six pollutants affecting multiple organs at very low doses. Kids are especially sensitive to Pb exposure, which causes learning deficits and lower IQ (https://www.epa.gov/lead-air-pollution/basic-information-about-lead-air-pollution#health).
The PoSH project continues by testing more waste materials for their potential to adsorb other types of pollutants, along with raising the environmental pollution awareness by involving the broader community in the project.
