Abstract

Several years intensive investigations have been made aiming to estimate the resistance of domestic tobacco varieties to Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotanae - the causing agent of black shank disease. Investigations were carried out in biological laboratory, using various phytopathological methods for inoculation and estimation of the disease index.
Three species of genus Nicotiana and 16 tobacco varieties (N. tabacum L.) with different rates of resistance were inoculated in a cotyledon stage with 5 isolates of the fungus. The isolates belonging to Race 0 and Race 1 differed in their virulence rate. The highest virulence was observed in the isolate P14 race 1, and the lowest in P4 Race 0.
The results revealed the highest rate of resistance to both races in tobacco species N. longiflora, N. plumbaginifolia, N. nesoplhila and in varieties Beinhart 1000 and Coker 371. Variety Ky14x L8 is highly resistant to Race 0 and susceptible to Race 1. The other varieties (Ky14, NC 2326 and B37) showed high susceptibility, i.e. medium resistance to both races.
Of the domestic varieties investigated, P 12-2/1, P-7, P-23, YK 7-4/2, YK 125/3, Dzebel No 1, O 9-18/2, B1/91 and MV1 showed a medium rate of resistance to Race 0 and Race 1 of the pathogen. The highest resistance to both races was noticed in the variety O 110-88/3.
These results, despite of their preliminary character, reveal that the young tobacco plants inoculated in a cotyledon stage can be used for making difference between susceptible and resistant tobacco varieties to Phytophthora parasitica var. nicotianae.
