Although the issue regarding the competences which a Lecturer of a Professional Foreign Language is to possess was open during the 1970s and 1980s, since the early 1990s, the issue is completely clear: the Lecturer of French language in the field of tourism or French language in the field of medicine is primarily a language professor, a linguist, and not a specialist in the profession the foreign language is taught for. The Lecturer of a Professional French Language does not teach general French language, but French Language for Specific Purposes (Français sur objectifs spécifiques, FOS). The French Language for Specific Purposes has 3 its own methodology through which the student adopts a specific professional vocabulary and syntax in order to be trained in using professional literature in the French language and for communicating in adequate professional situations. This specific character of the Professional Language faces the Lecturer with numerous problems and challenges. In order to overcome those problems and challenges, the Lecturer should possess specific competences concerning the methodology i.e. the organization of the classes for the Professional Language. Beside the capability to recognize/analyze the language needs of the students in the specific domain, the Lecturer also has a task to gather adequate information and materials which are relevant to the specific profession and will later by analyzed and didactically processed in adequate teaching materials. This paper will provide an insight in the relevant competences which a Lecturer of Professional French Language is to possess in order to organize a successful teaching program. It will also offer examples of teaching activities which could be useful for the Professional French Language classes.
