Abstract

Variety and way of curing are important factors which determine the yield and quality of Burley tobacco. Our three-year investigations (1999,2000,2001) included 6 male sterile hybrid tobacco varieties of the type Burley, 3 of which were local and 3 introduced. Tobacco was picked in two ways: as a whole plant and leaf by leaf and then cured on a string. According to the results, higher yields were obtained in the variant picked-and-stringed tobacco, while the average price was somewhat higher in the variant whole-plant-picking and curing. Gross income was lower in the variant whole-plant-picking and curing, mainly due to the lower yields per hectare. According to the analyzed properties in both ways of picking and curing, the varieties B-2/93 and Podravac dominate over the other varieties included in the trial.
