Abstract

As a result many-years breeding process in Tobacco Institute – Prilep, a new promising line was created – Prilep P–9. In the couse of 1994, on the Experimental field of Tobacco Institute, a comparative trial was carried out with the line P-9 and standard variety P 10-3/2. Results showed that P-9 has better morphological properties, greater number of leaves and higher stalk. It shows a greater resistance to some diseases (PTA, bassara and bacteriosis)and has also a higher yield. In relation to technological properties, the new line is in adventage, because it has a curly and elastic leaf tissue, with great substantiality. The estimation of dry tobacco achieved a value of 70% of higher classes, which was not the case with the standard P 10-3/2. P-9 is distinguished by a harmonized chemical composition and according to its taste characteristics it is a typical representative of aromatic tobaccos. Having in mind the great advantages of the line in relation to quantitative and qualitative properties compared to the standard variety, it is expected to be groun in a mass tobacco production in our Republic, especially in the region of Prilep.
