Abstract

In Lozovo County, significant amount of small-leaf aromatic tobacco is grown, primarily of the type Yaka, but the type Prilep is also presented. 65 samples were taken for investigation of soil fertility in this region. Investigations were made on the content of humus, nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, carbonates, pH-reaction and
mechanical composition of soil. The investigated soils samples showed medium content of humus (70.77%) and medium to good content of nitrogen (87.69%). The pH reaction ( except in two of the samples) is very suitable for small leaf tobaccos. Two thirds of the soils are carbonate-free and the rest of them have low carbonate content. About 60% of the samples show high and extremely high amount of available
phosphorus and 98.91% of them have extremely high potassium content.
According to these data, fertility of the investigated soils is quite good and therefore the amounts of basic mineral fertilizers applied with spring plowing should be highly rationalized. Since these soils are rich in potassium, the application of this element should be avoided for a period of 2-3 years.
