Abstract

The process of innovation becomes main source for small and medium-size tourism enterprises (SMTE) competitiveness, and also for service industry. Tourism industry is a fragmented sector, with large number of SMTE, labour intensive and low level of productivity. As a consequence, low levels of productivity result in low levels of competitiveness and decline in market position for both- SMTE and the destination.
Therefore, strategy based on innovation should be embedded into organizational structure already in early phase of venture development to prevent stagnation and losing the market share. Innovation strategy in the service sector is evolutionary in its essence, incorporates market demands for alternative and more sophisticated products, and applies knowledge management approach in order to add value to organizational processes and products.
