Abstract

Competitive market positioning and successful operation of SMEs in contemporary
conditions is increasingly determined by the application of innovation. Hence, the
establishment of a system for ongoing development of innovation through
mobilization of internal resources and potentials and/or their associated innovation
networks is essential to enhance the SMEs competitiveness. Empirical research
indicates that SMEs are becoming more dependent on external networks of
knowledge primarily because of limited financial and human resources to realize their
own research activities.
Innovation networks include cooperation and interaction between the subjects of
innovation system. These networks enable entrepreneurs and SMEs to overcome the
limitations arising from scarce research resources on the one hand, and utilization
innovations from external institutions and entities, on the other side. Hence, this
paper is primarily focused on considering the possibilities for increasing the linkage
of SMEs with innovation networks as an important prerequisite for fostering their
competitiveness
